Revenge is a natural reaction
to people who hurt or humiliate us.We want to get back. But then Christ call on
us to turn the other cheek, to go the extra mile. This goes against our
inclinations.
The message of Christ is a
call to seek peace and unity. We’re called away from
violence.This is a key to
finding peace in our war-torn world, in the violence
on our streets and, yes, peace in our families.
But in all this Christ
doesn’t permit abuse. We must flee abuse and
stop it as best we can.
Scripture
Matthew 5
An Eye for an Eye
38"You
have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth
for tooth.'[g]39But
I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone
strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the
other also.
40And
if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic let
him have your cloak as well.
41If someone forces you to
go one mile, go with him two miles.
42Give
to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from
the one who wants to borrow from you.
A Prayer
Lord, you call me to make strong changes in how I
think and act.To my natural inclination to revenge, you
call me to forgiveness and even surrender.Only with the assurance of your love will I
be able to do this. Please help me to let go of my natural
inclination toward revenge. But Lord, may I also never believe that you
sanction abuse.Amen.
