Healing through the cross

Reflection

The symbol of medicine is a pole with a snake on it. This comes from a story in the Bible. When the Hebrew people were afflicted by snakes in the desert, Moses held up a staff with a snake and all who looked on it were healed. When we come into a Catholic Church we find Jesus on the cross. This is a sight to bring healing to us just as the people in the desert were healed.

Scripture

John 3:13-17

No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.

And just as Moses lifted up ⁵ the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

⁶ so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."

For God so loved the world that he gave ⁷ his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn ⁸ the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Prayer

Lord, help me not to take your love for granted. You have died on the cross to show your love for me. Help me let that sink in. Let me live with the confidence of your intimate love for me. Let the cross be that sign of love for me.
